| 1. |
Remove steering wheel and hub
from upper steering shaft. |
| 2. |
Install
steering wheel hub collar to FFR
steering wheel hub assembly. (If steering wheel is attached, be careful
not to bend spokes) This should be an interference fit. Use a wood block,
dead blow hammer and carefully install collar on hub.
(if your hub diameter is slightly smaller, you can peen the FFR hub
surface to raise aluminum material or use
2-part epoxy to secure the collar) |
| 3. |
Pull
upper
steering shaft out (out of collapse joint) and set aside. Note.
loosen set screw on shaft stop. |
| 4. |
Modify
dash to make FFR's oval hole into a 2 to 2-1/4” round hole.
For best appearance, be careful to retrain enough dash cover material to
cover expanded hole opening.
Note: A larger hole (2-1/2"
max.) will allow the wheel to be farther away from driver, but may require
a slight cut off the column tube.
|
| 5. |
Place
column tube (tab end towards
Pillow block) into enlarged dash hole. |
| 6. |
Using
upper
steering shaft for alignment, partially install shaft through column tube,
pillow block then a few inches into lower shaft. Note.
Do not fully install shaft as it is difficult to remove. |
| 7. |
Center
tab end of column tube into pillow block retainer assembly. Check
location of tube within dash hole. (Washers or shims can be used to
adjust height of pillow block.) |
| 8. |
Mark
and drill through column's tab hole into pillow block perch directly below steering
shaft to retain column tube assembly |
| 9. |
Insert
and thread sheet metal screw into retainer hole. |
| 10. |
Remove
upper shaft for modification below. |
| 11. |
Pass
wires of signal switch through hole in dash, along the outside of column tube
assy. |
| 12. |
Install
turn switch onto column tube,
fully pressing
shoulder of switch to column tube |
| 13. |
Tighten
(snug) set screw with switch lever at a 8:30 o’clock position. For
British correct configuration, unit can be placed at a 3:00 o'clock
position. |
| 14. |
Make
wiring connections; as follows:
Black/green
– Right Turn Signal
Black/white
– Left Turn Signal
Black/white/green
stripe – 12 volt (switched hot)
Brown
– Horn switch, wired in series or High/Low Dimmer relay **
** High/Low Dimmer option requires the use
of Volkswagen part# 111.941.583 (not included) connected to brown wires. |
| 15. |
Location
of Canceling Cams is Critical!
Install
(weld) release cams onto steering shaft. (To cancel the turn indicator inside
switch, this must be positioned with cam at 12 and 6 o'clock -- 2-1/2” down
from the shaft end. (see illustration A)
Important:
for the cams to cancel the switch when re-centering the wheel, the cams
(dowels) must rest along outer diameter
and not fall into machined/recessed areas. TIP: to be sure
I've got the right cam height and location, I wrap the shaft once
with masking tape, lay in the cams, then continue to wrap the cams in
place for tack welding along the ends. When installed correctly, the
cams will create an overall diameter of 1.375" (= 1-3/8") along
their length.

| 16. |
Install
modified shaft through column tube, pillow block, stop ring, and into
lower shaft. Carefully (slowly) install upper shaft into lower
shaft so that the cam(s) will just begin to cancel
switch. Final shaft location will be determined after Steering
Wheel is fully tighten. |
| 17. |
Place
steering wheel hub and wheel assembly onto shaft. Important:
test steering wheel motion over
range of travel and signal cancellation operations before proceeding to next step. |
| 18. |
Reinstall
wheel hub assembly making note of the correct (straight) steering wheel
location. Tighten retaining bolt to factory spec. (23-33 ft-lbs) |
| 19. |
If
needed, gently tap shaft to achieve a 1/16" gap between collar and
switch assembly. (Slight gap needed to prevent rubbing through full range
of wheel rotation.)
|
| 20. |
Re-position shaft
stop ring and re-tighten set screw. |
